Surgical Curettes

Curette is a surgical instrument shaped like a scoop or spoon, used to
remove tissue or growths from a body cavity. Although they are not typically
cutting instruments they are used for minor cutting as well.
Bone curettes are often used for removing excess bone cement. They are also
used in bone tumor removal and bone grafting techniques.
Dental curettes
are used for removing the debris from the tooth cavity or the tooth and bone
splinters from the tooth sockets.
Ear curettes are used to remove
the wax from the ears.
Chalazion Curettes are used for excision of
chalazia, cysts, eyelid tumours and pterygium ablation. The curette is loop
like (open cup) with a razor edge.
Most curettes come with a round or oval, closed-cup design. Some may have
the open cup ring type design for specific purposes. The curettes used in
dental surgery come in many sizes and in straight or angled shapes. The one
to be used depends upon the nature of the socket, curvature of the roots of
teeth that were in the socket, and the location of the cavity.
The
dental curettes blade has a half circle cross-section,
continuous cutting edge and Rounded back.As per the use, dental curettes can
be universal curets or area-specific curettes. The Universal curettes can be
adapted to the lateral surface of any tooth, the blade face forms 90 degree
angle with the shankand has two cutting edges joined at the rounded toe.
Area specific scalers are desined to tackle specific areas of mouth. The
blade is at 70-degree to the shank with the lower cutting edge sharpened.
Endometrial curettes are suction type curettes used to draw tissues
for histological assessments. The curette end may be single port or
multiport. The elongated multiports are suitable for larger area tissue
draws. They have a suction plunger to create a constant vacuum.
Endocervical curettes are used
take tissue samples from the cervix. Both types can be classified under
Uterine curettes
